ETHOS INCLUDES:

• POLITICS
• LAWS
• SOCIAL ASPIRATIONS
OUR STUDY OF ETHICS:
• STUDY OF CHARACTERISTICS BELONGING TO MAN AS A RATIONAL BEING ENDOWED WITH INTELLECT AND FREE WILL
ETHOS OF A MAN:
• DESTINGUISH BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL, RIGHT AND WRONG, AND MORAL AND IMMORAL
• AN OBLIGATION TO DO WHAT IS GOOD AND TO AVOID WHAT IS EVIL
• A FEELING OF ACCOUNTABILITY FOR HIS ACTIONS (REWARD / PUNISHMENT)
DEFINITION OF ETHICS:
• The Science of the morality of human acts
• The study of Human Motivation, and ultimately, of Human Rational Behavior
• Primary interest is Morality
ETHICS AS VALUE EDUCATION:
• Branch of Philosophy
• Moral Theology
• Values Education
ART OF CORRECT LIVING:
• Art is the Appreciation of Beauty
• Refinement of the Spirit
• Ethics is an art; the Breath of Life
• Master Plan
• Every man is an artist
IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS:
• Indispensable knowledge
• Without moral perception, man is only an animal
• Ethics as the only necessary knowledge
TWO ETHICAL SYSTEMS (CLASSIFIED):
• Atheistic
• Theistic
ATHEISTIC APPROACH:
• There is no God
• Only matter exists; man is only responsible to himself
• Morality is invented by man
• Moral truths are temporary
• Good and evil are relative and changeable
ATHEISTIC PRINCIPLES:
• Matter is the only reality
• Man is matter; no spiritual dimension
• Man is free and must exercise his freedom to promote the welfare of society
• No life after death
• Man is accountable only to the State
THEISTIC APPROACH:
• God is the Supreme Lawgiver
• Eternal Plan of Creation of God
• Man has freedom to exercise God’s will
• Morality is absolute; unchangeable
• Man is accountable for his actions
• Life after death
THEISTIC PRINCIPLES:
• God is the Supreme Creator and Lawgiver
• Man is free and must choose his freedom to promote his personal and social interests along with his fellowmen
• Man has an immortal soul that cannot die
• Man is accountable for his actions; Reward and Punishment
ETHICS AND RELIGION:
• Ethics is a science and depends on investigation of its truths
• Religion is a system of beliefs and practices based on faith and / or revelation
ETHICS AND LAW:
• Ethics studies Human Motivation
• Law is concerned with what we do and not what we feel
• Proof
• What is legal is not necessary moral
PROFESSIONAL ETHICS:
• Code of Ethics
• A professional listen to the “dictates of reason”
• Honest business is good business
• Public Perception
BUSINESSMEN TO CUSTOMERS:
• Quality; serve purpose effectively and efficiently
• Health / Safety
• Discover and Apply innovations, inventions or adaptations
